Who fired Lew Wallace, and when?

In early April, 1862, Maj. Gen. Lew Wallace was the commander of the Third Division in U.S. Grant's Army of the Tennessee.  By the end of the summer, he was not.  When was he relieved of this command, and by whom?  One might think this is a pair of questions that is easily answered, but getting to the full story takes some digging.

Jim Epperson is a retired mathematician who considers himself a true "child of the 60s"---both 19th and 20th Centuries!  He has given numerous talks to Round Tables throughout the upper Midwest, and is active on several online discussion forums.  A 1975 graduate of the University of Michigan's College of Engineering, he earned his mathematics Ph.D. in 1980 from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh.  After 20 years teaching mathematics at universities in Georgia and Alabama, Jim relocated his family to Ann Arbor to take up a position as an Associate Editor with the American Mathematical Society, from which position he retired in 2021.   He lives in Ann Arbor with his wife of 42 years, and many fond memories of Border Collies past.
